  • INFLUENCE OF SOME ENVIRONMENTAL ATTRIBUTES ON NITRIFICATION POTENTIAL OF CRUDE OIL CONTAMINATED SEDIMENT OF QUA IBOE RIVER ESTUARY MANGROVE ECOSYSTEM AMENDED WITH NPK FERTILIZER

Richard C. John, Emem S. Ntino and Alfred Y. Itah

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of temperature, pH, organic carbon, salinity and ammonium concentration on the nitrification potential and nitrification rate of crude oil contaminated sediment of Qua Iboe River estuary mangrove ecosystem treated with NPK fertilizer. Nitrification potential rate (NPR) and Nitrification rate (NR) of the mangrove sediment were determined by amending the sediment with sodium chlorate to inhibit the oxidation of NO2-N to NO3-N.

  • POTENTIAL NITRIFICATION ACTIVITY AND AUTOTROPHIC NITRIFYING BACTERIA IN HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED MANGROVE SEDIMENT OF THE NIGER DELTA, NIGERIA

Richard C. John, Alfred Y. Itah and Gideon C. Okpokwasili

Abstract:
The activities of nitrifying bacteria in the sediment of Qua Iboe River, Cross River and Imo River estuary mangrove ecosystems were investigated using bacteriological technique. Samples were collected over eight month period from the micro-habitat (epipellic and benthic sediment).
