Abstract: Poetry is a linguistic act, i.e. to say it is an activity or composition in language. Although this seems an obvious point, it needs to be stated rather strongly in the context of stylistic study. No literary critic nor any scholar would dispute this point. However, a dispute does arises when the function and status of the language in poetry is taken into account. It would be helpful to briefly discussour points of view in this regard. We maintain that language being the base of poetry, has to be looked at as such.
