Abstract: भारतीय इतिहास लेखन की अवधारणाएँ एवं परम्परा विवादास्पद रही हैं। कुछ लेखकों के विचार में, जिनमें भारतीय तथा यूरोपीय दोनों सम्मिलित हैं, प्राचीन भारतीयों की इतिहास लेखन में अभिरूचि नहीं थी क्योंकि एक तो वे दैवी शक्तियों के समक्ष स्वयं को सर्वथा नगण्य समझते थे इसलिए हीनता या जीवन की व्यर्थता की भावना का कोई इतिहास नहीं हो सकता। दूसरे मोक्ष प्राप्ति के लक्ष्य ने उन्हें भोतिक जगत से विमुख कर दिया। इसके अतिरिक्त भारतीयों के मन में काल-बोध, जो इतिहास का मूलाधार है, गौण तत्त्व था। इस आलोचना के उत्तर में कहा जा सकता है कि यह ठीक है कि प्राचीन भारतीयों ने इस प्रकार का इतिहास नहीं लिखा जैसा कि वर्तमान में परिभाषित होता है। परन्तु इसका अर्थ यह नहीं है कि उनकी इतिहास लेखन में रूचि नहीं थी।
