Abstract: Ideologically, partition in general whether at the level of family, state or nation, is seen as an answer to the simmering tension of the troubled peaceless coexistence. But in the Indian context of partition coinciding Independence in 1947, it has raised more questions than it has answered. Does it solve the problems or multiply them? What happens in the wake of such resolutions? Does the partition divide the geographical space only or the mindscape as well? What is the role of those who are supposed to maintain peace, law and order? Questions like these attain not only historic significance, but also provide patterns for other such events. The present paper intends to study Bhisham Sahni’s Tamas as a novel of hope in the midst of madness. It highlights how the partition remains an obsession in Indian sub consciousness. The novel was written after a considerable period of time, twenty five years after the partition. And it was translated into English by Sahni himself after about three decades. It employs memory as a trope and scrutinizes the individuals’ roles and the compromising positions in relation to state and community agendas. It also takes into account the questions of identity and fragmented representations of selfhood, consciousness, experience, and understanding as recurring formal and thematic concerns.

Abstract: This paper examines the features of Modernism in British literature with a specific focus on Virginia Woolf’s innovative use of the stream of consciousness technique in Mrs. Dalloway. Emerging in the early twentieth century, Modernism reflected the disillusionment, fragmentation, and shifting cultural values of a post-war society, challenging traditional forms of narrative and representation. Woolf, as a leading Modernist writer, redefined literary expression by privileging subjective experience over objective reality, presenting the fluid and complex processes of human thought. Through the parallel consciousness of Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Warren Smith, Mrs. Dalloway highlights themes of identity, memory, alienation, and trauma while capturing the interplay between individual psychology and the social fabric of modern urban life. By analyzing Woolf’s narrative techniques, symbolism, and thematic concerns, this study underscores her pivotal role in shaping Modernist fiction and demonstrates how stream of consciousness became a powerful tool to articulate the inner realities of human existence.
