Abstract: अलङ्कारों का इतिहास अत्यन्त प्राचीन हैं। वेदों में भी अनेकअलङ्कारों का प्रयोग हुआ है। ऋग्वेद मेंउपमा,अतिशयोक्ति,व्यतिरेकजैसे अर्थालङ्कारों का अत्यन्त स्वाभाविकप्रवाह में प्रयोग मिलता है।उत्प्रेक्षा,अनुप्रास,पुनरुक्तवदाभास,रूपकादिअर्थालङ्कारों का प्रयोग भी प्रचुर मात्रा में हुआ है। तत्पश्चात्ब्राह्मण,उपनिषद्,रामायण,महाभारत आदि तो अर्थालङ्कारों से भरे पड़े हैं। प्राचीन काल मेंअर्थालङ्कारोंको काव्यात्मा के रूप में देखा जाता रहा था। शनै:शनै: उसका आत्मस्थानीय स्वरूप नष्ट हो गया। आनन्दवर्धन,मम्मट आदि ने अलङ्कारों को बाह्य तत्त्वों के रूप में देखा। शब्दार्थरूप शरीर की कटककुण्डलादिवत् शोभावर्द्धकतत्त्व अलङ्कार कहलाते हैं—ऐसी अवधारणा विकसित हुई और आत्मतत्त्व के रूप में ध्वनि की मान्यता हुई।

Abstract: The Theatre of the Absurd is the return to the old and archaic traditions, but with a difference. Its novelty lies in its unusual combination of its antecedents and the expansion and revaluation of procedures that are familiar and completely acceptable in only slightly different contexts.The dream motifs and the elements of fantasy are frequently found in the Theatre of the Absurd. Albert Camus’ Caligula and Girish Karnad’sTughlaq present an absurd vision of the world through tyrannical protagonists who use their power absolutely. An existential revolt as well as a struggle for asserting one’s existence is clearly pervading throughout both the plays. This article focuses on both Absurd Drama and Progressive Theatre being the major influences for Camus and Karnad in their plays Caligula and Tughlaq.
